Throughout our 100-year history, Memorial Hospital has been supported by donors and friends throughout the Mt. Washington Valley community. In fact, we were founded in 1910 through the generosity of Helen Bigelow Merriman, who donated 25 acres of land on which the Hospital is located today.

“We wish the hospital, which now becomes yours to administer, to be first of all a means for the relief of human suffering. We also wish it to be a place of memory, so that everyone who shall give to it time, money or devoted service, may feel that in so giving, they are perpetuating here, for the good of this valley, the memory and influence of beloved friends who have passed from sight,” said Mrs. Merriman in May, 1911, when she presented the title and keys to the hospital’s first board of trustees.

Today, we honor the memory of our founder by recognizing annual fund contributors who give $250 or more as “Bigelow Donors.” Memorial Hospital, however, is pleased to accept gifts in any amount, as they help us carry on the legacy and vision of Mrs. Merriman and allow us to provide a number of important community service programs to ensure that everyone in our community has access to high quality healthcare provided with a personal touch.
